The high-build products cost quite a bit more, but they may be worth the expense, especially if you are preparing a drywall surface that is rough. Fora basic drywall primer-sealer, there is little reason to spend a lot.

A high-build drywall primer should be used to help hide new joint compound seams that have pits and scratches in the surface. Finish coat with any latex or alkyd-based coating. Never use alkyd or oil-based on bare drywall, it will raise the paper fibers and permanently ruin the drywall finish.
A light sanding before the primer coat will encourage primer and paint adhesion. Use 100-grit sandpaper to rough up the smooth surface of the paneling. After sanding, use a cloth to wipe the wall and clean up the dust left behind. Finally, wipe down the walls with a chemical deglossing liquid to remove any trace of the paneling’s old finish.
Mar 16, 2009 · You use “USG First Coat” primer/sealer, or go to Lowe's and get their "Construction First Step" primer/sealer, using that instead of the others. These are essentially high build primers that WILL provide you adequate coverage in one good coat and eliminate what's killing you.
